FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — A committee of the University of California’s governing board has unanimously approved a statement, citing anti-Semitism as a form of intolerance, which campus leaders are obligated to challenge.
A “Statement of Principles Against Intolerance” now heads to the full board of regents, for final consideration.
But, the committee has softened a reference in an accompanying report, which listed anti-Zionism as a type of discrimination.
The move comes amid tensions between Palestinian rights supports, and allies of Israel, who seek greater protections for Jewish students.
Critics, meanwhile, argue that it threatens free speech on campus.
