FRESNO (KMJ) — The terrorist events in Brussels are now the subject of intense investigation, but law enforcement here in the valley say we need to stay vigilant too.

Belgian officials have called for three days of national mourning, to honor those killed and injured after the two deadly attacks which took place Tuesday morning. Here in the in the valley, law enforcement wants us all to remain on alert too as a tip about bag or box out of place could be very important.

“It seems that what happened in Brussels may have been a fairly focused group of folks, from outside of their country even”, says Madera County Sheriff Jay Varney.

“Here in the central valley, if they’re already here we don’t control immigration – we don’t control that. We just want to make sure that the public’s passing on to us anything that happens that’s suspicious so that we can vet it properly”.

He adds that they would prefer the public to call them, and it be nothing, than get no call and have people get injured, especially after events in San Bernardino have shown that it can happen here in California.

“We’ve had a few things that we have passed on to the terrorism center over the past three months.

Those cases, passed on to federal investigators, mostly have to do with people’s electronic presence being hijacked by someone who’s trying to either purport them to be self-radicalized or hijacking their work so that they can piggy-back their own radical agenda on the backside of that.

“We have a great group of federal agencies represented here in the city of Fresno, and they work throughout the region. Anything we have that they pass onto them they act upon it immediately”.

Flags at Fresno State and all federal buildings will be flying at half staff today, to remember the victims of the terrorist attack in Brussels.
