Bullet Train’s Future Now in Judge’s Hands

(KMJ)  Attorneys for and against the controversial $68 billion High Speed Rail project have made their closing arguments in the state capital.

Both sides wrapped up their cases Thursday.  Now a Sacramento County Superior Court judge must decide if the proposed bullet train complies with the requirements established after the passage of Prop 1-A.

It was approved by California voters in 2008.  But a group from Kings County filed a lawsuit against it and the High Speed Rail Authority in 2011.

Judge Michael Kenny has been hearing arguments about the 2008 ballot measure that said California’s high-speed rail would be able to whisk passengers between San Francisco and Los Angeles in two hours and 40 minutes, and that the system would not need a state subsidy to operate.  Opponents say current plans would not meet those requirements.  Travel times, ticket prices and ridership estimates were also called into question.

Judge Kenny has 90 days to render a decision in this case.
