KMJ Exclusive: Chief Jerry Dyer Responds to Findings of Internal Report

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer sat down with KMJ’s Chis Daniel Tuesday afternoon, to discuss the recently-released findings of an internal report, addressing morale in the department.

The report was not-so-flattering for the Fresno Police Force but Chief Jerry Dyer is actually the one who commissioned it.

It was after Deputy Police Chief Keith foster’s indictment that Police Chief Dyer requested a survey to take the pulse of the Fresno police force.

“When this thing happened with Former Deputy Chief foster, it hurt…it hurt a lot of people because I think a lot of people were just…shocked!” – Chief Jerry Dyer.

Coming out of a rough seven years, and cutbacks during the Recession, the picture was not so flattering with 2/3 of the force indicating they were dissatisfied.

“This thing was done 4 -5 months ago, the survey was relatively prior to that so it was relatively fresh.” – Chief Jerry Dyer.

But Chief Dyer says he wanted to know, and Mayor Ashley Swearengin says she supports the Chief and appreciates the feedback.

“You know they don’t necessarily tell you things you want to hear, I know this from personal experience having served in public office for the seven years, but it’s important to get that feedback, and to receive the input, take advantage of it, make good decisions based on that input – as well as the overall picture we have to work with – and keep moving our city forward.” – Mayor Ashley Swearengin.

Both the Mayor and Chief say Fresno is at a different place, now, as the city continues to add officers to the police force, and focus on public safety.

“We have to move on from that, and I believe we have as an organization.” – Chief Jerry Dyer.
