FCC Ram Pantry Opens To Fight Student Food Insecurity

Hunger should not be a barrier to success for college students.

To combat this, Fresno City College is opening the first ever Ram Pantry on January 22, 2016.

The mission of the Ram Pantry is to fight student hunger and address food insecurity among FCC students. If a student has gone through the dilemma of having to purchase books or food, they have experienced food insecurity. Food insecurity means not knowing when your next meal will be. It is when an individual has limited access to adequate food.

“Over the last probably five years, we noticed hunger and we noticed it in subtle ways and the more we noticed it the more we started talking about and it eventually it became – we really need to do something about this.” — Sean Henderson, FCC Student Activities Director.

Thanks to the generous contributions of the Fresno City College faculty and staff, the Ram Pantry has the seed money it needs to open.

Now, Fresno City College seeks the help of community sponsors to help keep the Ram Pantry stocked and sustained.

Local businesses that would like to donate their products are welcomed to do so.

Monetary donations are always welcome and can be used to purchase needed food items.

Every Thursday, food bags will be assembled for distribution in the FCC Staff Dining Room from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The Ram Pantry will distribute food every Friday from 10:00 a.m. To 2 p.m., while supplies last, and current students with an ASB card are eligible to receive a food bag..

The initial goal is provide food for up to 300 students to start out.

“A lot of our students are used to having some food support during their elementary and secondary education so coming to the college or university I think it’s a bit of a shock that there’s not that help, and also there’s also a bit of a shock that in an area that supplies the world with food that we’d have so little of it in our community”. – Sean Henderson, FCC Student Activities Director.
