FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The California Supreme Court says federal law does not bar consumers from filing lawsuits under state law, alleging that food products are falsely labeled “organic.”

The ruling overturns a lower court decision which barred such lawsuits, on the grounds that they were superseded by federal law.

Justices say allowing the suits furthers congressional goals of curtailing fraud, and ensuring that consumer can rely on organic labels.
