FRESNO (KMJ) — A registered sex offender who simply walked out of Fresno County Jail, has turned himself back in.
It was Wednesday morning when David Riggins escaped jail after essentially trading places with another inmate.
The other inmate was being released that day and Riggins allegedly switched bracelets with him and learnt enough about him to pass as him.
But David Riggins quickly realized everyone was looking for him and he turned himself in just before 1am Thursday morning.
“He told a staff member there that he knew there was an intense search by law enforcement going on all day looking for him”, says Fresno County Sheriff’s Office’s Tony Botti. “He said he was just tired of hiding”.
The mass publication of David Riggins’ details helped enormously.
“That pressure obviously travelled to Riggins”, continues Botti. “He knew there was a large search by law enforcement going on looking for him”.
“It appears that just rather than ending in any sort of confrontation he took the high road and walked into our jail lobby and turned himself in”.
He adds that the sheriff’s office do take responsibility for what happened.
Riggins is now back in Fresno County Jail, facing the additional charges of escape and conspiracy.
