An unlicensed Riverdale driver will serve three years of probation for killing five people in a fiery collision last February.
The Fresno Bee reports that the victims’ family says the sentence given to Juana Martinez Bejarano is too light. She was sentenced Tuesday for running a stop sign in her minivan and killing 29-year-old Esmeralda Tafoya-Saucedo and her four children.
Tafoya-Saucdeo’s sister described the punishment as “a slap on the hand.”
Martinez Bejarano’s attorney Sam Salhab said the crash was an accident and that she wasn’t speeding, texting or using a phone.
Her punishment includes a work program and electronic monitoring.
Martinez Bejarano said through an interpreter that she is sorry, but the family called the apology insincere.
