FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Plowing the field is a usual fall practice here in the Central Valley, but the USDA says this year, let your plow rest.

If we see high-intensity rainfall, which we have during previous El Nino events, fields will greatly benefit from crop residue left on the surface.

Plants serve as a so-called “field shield,” and protect vulnerable soil.

Right now, experts say, is a great time to plant a cover crop to combat erosion.
