A retired food services worker from Fresno Unified turns 100.

It’s a milestone birthday for Ruby Barton who celebrates the century mark.

“We came and we wanted to surprise her to help her celebrate her 100th birthday and as we looked around the room -we see a lot of employees and connection and a big Fresno Unified family, so we knew we wanted to make it a special event for her.” -Christopher De La Cerda, FUSD Board Member.

About a dozen – now retired – district employees were at the Denny’s on Shaw and First to celebrate her birthday—including Ruby’s nephew, retired Roosevelt teacher Ed Barton.

“We lived together on my grandfather’s farm during the war years – and so, she’s just like a mother to me.” – Ed Barton, Ruby’s nephew.

Ruby worked at Ahwahnee Middle School for 22 years,,,,her advice – keep working.

“That’s very important, physically, mentally in every way is to keep up with some activity.” – Ruby Barton, Centenarian.
