20 year old Ronald Castanon of Clovis led Sheriffs on a high speed chase before surrendering to a K9.
According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, the robberies began on Sunday at 1:00 am, when Castanon pointed a gun at the Arco Gas Station clerk in Clovis, demanding cash and getting away with the money.
He later did the same at Yo Town Frozen Yogurt in Prather.
On Monday, October 5th, Deputies patrolling the Pinedale area spotted Castanon driving a Chevy Impala – which turned out to be stolen.
They recognized he was wanted for recent robberies, a burglary and various assault with a deadly weapon cases, and with help from Fresno Police and the CHP helicopter they attempted to pull him over, and a high speed chase ensued ending up on the northbound 99Freeway.
Castanon tossed a gun out the window which officers later recovered, and took off for Los Banos on the 152 freeway with officers behind.
Just short of Tracy his car ran out of gas…and he ditched it on the 580 Freeway, south of Tracy.
Dispatchers received reports that Castanon attempted unsuccessfully to carjack two different passing motorists by grabbing hold of their door handles.
Deputies got tips to search in the area of 37-thousand Bird Road. And the Fresno County Sheriff’s helicopter, Eagle One, ground and they found Castanon hiding in some grass near a gravel plant.
Castanon refused to comply with the deputy’s commands to surrender, so he deployed his K9.
The dog bit Castanon, which allowed the deputy take him into custody.
Deputies recovered the stolen Chevy Impala and found meth inside the car.
This vehicle was identified as being involved in the previously mentioned robberies.
