(KMJ) The “Rough Fire” continues to char thousands of acres of the Sierra and Sequoia National Forests.
As of Tuesday, the lightning-sparked blaze, had burned nearly 52,000 acres and is 17% contained. According to the US Forest Service, more than 1,900 firefighters are on the front lines.
There will be a community meeting regarding the Rough Fire on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 6:30 pm at Dunlap School, 39667 Dunlap Rd. Dunlap, CA 93621. The meeting will be hosted by California Interagency Incident Management Team 3. Incident Commander Mark von Tillow will discuss the current fire situation and the operational plan for the Rough Fire. There will also be remarks by the local fire and law enforcement authorities on hand.
Firefighters say the fire continues to spread toward Hume Lake. Air resources, including helicopters dropping water, and fixed-wing aircraft using fire retardant are working to create firelines, according to the USFS.
Over 2,500 campers, hikers, employees, and residents have been evacuated from Hume Lake Christian Camp, private cabins, campgrounds, and the surrounding area in recent days.
All campgrounds in Kings Canyon National Park are now closed until further notice. The Kings Canyon Visitor Center will be open with modified hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The General Grant Tree, Panoramic Point, park trails, John Muir Lodge, Grant Grove Cabins, restaurant, market, and gift shop remain open.
