FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — An investigation has been launched into Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama after allegations that he was involved in an inappropriate off-duty relationship.

In a statement sent out Thursday, the City of Fresno said the affair allegedly happened with a non-city employee.

The city statement adds that Balderrama informed Mayor Jerry Dyer and City Manager Georgeanne White that the allegations would be made against him.

The City’s Attorney’s Office has hired an independent investigator to look into the claims.

The city’s statement says the investigation is in the review process.

The city says Balderrama will remain on duty and continue to serve as police chief during the process.

Balderrama was sworn in as the city’s 23rd police chief in 2021.

Balderrama worked for the Oklahoma City Police Department for more than 20 years before coming to Fresno.
