When the Planet Vegan food truck exploded last Friday afternoon, KMJ listeners were quick to call in with their witness accounts of the blast that rocked the busy area around Shaw and First.
Now, a large fundraising effort is underway to help the victims who suffered serious burns.

The truck owner, Joe Ellis, was working on the truck at the time of the accident, sending him to the hospital. An account of the incident was detailed on a GoFundMe page: “His quick thinking to jump out the window of the truck is what has saved his life. He has been in critical care since the incident. As of now, he is suffering from severe burns throughout 35% of his body forcing him to under go multiple surgeries this week. This will help him with the trauma this disaster has cause upon him”.
A fundraiser at a handful of different locations will be held Thursday, June 30 with dozens of local food trucks donating a portion of their proceeds to Ellis and the other victims.
On Thursday, June 30th, there will be a fundraiser at five different locations with 30 food trucks in total.
All of the food trucks will start serving at 5pm at the following locations: Crow & Wolf Brewing, Gazebo Grill, Kingsburg Farmer’s Market, Tioga-Sequoia Brewing and The Well Community Church.
“Joe has a long road to recovery ahead & your donations will go to help with medical expenses, damages caused by the explosion including the loss of the truck . Joe loves his business Planet Vegan and the people he worked with, he dedicated himself on the truck to serve people plant-based food and creating change to his community. He is grateful for the love and support received during this time. We are blessed and thankful that he is alive. We ask that you guys keep him, his family, and everyone else effected by this on behalf of Joe in your thoughts and prayers. Last but not least we would like to wish fast and speedy recovery for the other 2 parties physically harmed by this incident. Thank you”
This fundraiser was put together by Joe’s family, closest friends and business partners.
