Controversial Photo Prompts Policy Changes Within Fresno Unified

(KMJ) – Administrators at Fresno Unified say they are now making changes to District policies as a result of the controversy surrounding a picture that appears to show a student wearing a makeshift KKK hood.

The picture circulated through social media Thursday, and appears to have been taken in a weight room at Bullard High School.

Doctor Bob Nelson, Superintendent of Fresno Unified School District, addressed hundreds of students who stood in protest outside district headquarters Friday afternoon. And he told them two changes will take effect immediately.

He says once the students involved in the picture are identified, they will be disciplined and will have to undergo cultural sensitivity training.

And he also promised to expand the district’s Race and Social Justice Advisory Board to include a Students Governing Board at each high school.

“There’s no such thing as a joke if it involves race. It’s just not something that’s a topic of humor,” Nelson said. “It’s sadly not a single point in time.”
