Secretary of State Certifies Gov. Gavin Newsom Recall Petition

SACRAMENTO, CA (KMJ) — California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D. announced on Thursday that her office has notified Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis that she has certified the petition to recall Governor Gavin Newsom.

California on Thursday scheduled a Sept. 14 recall election that could drive Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom from office, the result of a political uprising largely driven by angst over state coronavirus orders that shuttered schools and businesses and upended life for millions of Californians.

1,719,900 signatures have been determined to be valid, which is enough for the recall election to move forward.

A total of 2,161,349 signatures had been submitted.

The recall election date was set by Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, a Democrat, after election officials certified that enough valid petition signatures had been turned in to qualify the election for the ballot.

Kounalakis is required to set a date for the election not less than 60 days nor more than 80 days from the date of the certification of the signatures.
