FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson has announced a 20% decline in the number of students expelled, and a more than 15% drop, in the number of kids suspended. That’s a decrease of nearly 50,000 students.

The improvement comes amid a collaboration between the Department of Education and districts, to implement “restorative justice.”

However, leaders say there remains a disparity among African-American students’ rates of suspension. which have fallen minimally.
