Fresno State’s Food Bank Is A Success

FRESNO (KMJ) — Tablets in the classroom – staff pay increases – but uncertainty for some students.

It was announced on Monday that some Fresno State students couldn't afford to eat enough to keep learning.

"We had observed that students surveyed on the campus were not getting adequate food to be successful as students", said President Joseph Castro. "So we looked at report that was done. It showed 30% of the students here at Fresno State were not getting adequate nourishment – they were food insecure.

"We had one student whose apartment had burnt down and lost everything – sometimes it can be down to emergency medical work".

To combat it – staff have created a food bank called the 'Student Cupboard&#39 – which opened just before Thanksgiving.

Donations are coming from individuals both on and off campus. A partnership with the Community Food Bank will also see some of their donations being used too.

The publicly funded university also announced that all staff will be getting a pay raise. According to President Castro – it's to deal with their own expenses which increase every year.

It was also announced plans are set to continue to put more tablet computers in the classrooms. There are plans to include 5,000 students in tablet classes by next fall.

There'll $30 million worth of improvement towards upgrading electrical infrastructure too – a project being referred to as the highest non-academic priority.
