Warning To Illegal Immigrants Applying For Driver’s Licenses

FRESNO (AP) — Undocumented immigrants in the valley looking to apply for driver licenses may be putting themselves at risk.

Applications for undocumented immigrant driver licenses can be filed from January 2nd. With a week to go until the new rules come into place – some are being warned to think twice.

Immigrant activists say the vast majority should be able to get licensed without any problems – but those who applied using someone else's name or social security number could run into issues.

That's because federal immigration officials can access DMV databases during an investigation.

But the warning isn't designed to put people off applying – Sacramento wants to make driving safer for undocumented immigrants – and everyone else on the roads too.

Licenses issued under the new rules will have a distinctive mark on them to differentiate them from licenses issued to U.S. citizens and other legal residents.
