University of California Delays Vote on Raising Tuition

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The University of California has delayed a contentious vote originally planned for Wednesday on whether to raise tuition at its 10 campuses.

The office of UC President Janet Napolitano said Tuesday the Board of Regents would discuss the proposals at its Wednesday meeting and vote at a later date.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday objected to the proposed increase, calling it “inconsistent with our college affordability goals.’

Newsom has proposed a funding increase to the system as part of his budget.

The system says it must cover a plan for long-neglected repairs to infrastructure, address faculty and staff salary and tackle  other issues.
