MODESTO, CA (KMJ) – An alleged cop killer is arraigned Wednesday in Modesto.
Gustavo Perez Arriaga told the judge at the Stanislaus County Curthouse that his name is actually Paulo Virgen Mendoza, and that Arriaga was an alias.
Mendoza has been charged with the murder of 33-year-old Corporal Ronil Singh, along with a special circumstance enhancement that makes the case eligible for the death penalty.
No plea was entered during the proceeding.
Mendoza’s attorney told the court he has “concern” for his client’s competence.
Proceedings have been suspended pending a doctor’s mental health evaluation.
32-year-old Mendoza is expected to return to court on February 7th.
