FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – One person has been killed in a head-on crash Wednesday morning with a military vehicle near Cholame.
It was about 7:45 a.m., when the California Highway Patrol says a military vehicle blew a tire by where Highway 41 meets Highway 46, in the Cholame Y.
The military transport vehicle veered into the oncoming lane, hitting a sedan, the driver was killed in the collision.
The California Highway Patrol has identified the person killed as a 58-year-old man from Rowland Heights. His name has not yet been released as authorities are working to notify his next of kin.
The man’s vehicle was struck head-on by an M1078 military tactical vehicle that blew a tire, causing it to cross into oncoming traffic on Highway 46 at Davis Rd., according to a CHP report.
Two people in the military truck were taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
The military vehicle involved in the crash was returning home from completing a Combat Support Training Exercise at Fort Hunter Liggett, according to Fort Hunter Liggett Public Affairs Officer, Amy Phillips.
The intersection is also known as “Blood Alley,” it’s the same deadly stretch of road where actor James Dean died in an accident in the 1950’s.
Traffic on the Cholame Y usually increases over the summer months as people escape the Central Valley heat and head to the coast.
