FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Dogs, cats, and rabbits sold in California pet stores, will soon have to come exclusively from shelters or rescue organizations.
Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a measure requiring that to become state law this January.
It aims to lower the expense of running animal shelters in the Golden State, which is presently around $250 million a year.
Pet stores who violate the law will face a misdemeanor charge, and a penalty of $500 per violation.
