Governor Brown Declares State of Emergency in Madera, Mariposa & Tulare Counties Due to Fires


FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Governor Jerry Brown issued an emergency proclamation Thursday for Madera, Mariposa and Tulare counties due to the effects of the Railroad, Pier, Mission and Peak fires.

The fires have caused evacuations and burned thousands of acres, threatening homes and critical infrastructure.

As of 5:30pm Thursday, the Pier Fire had grown to nearly 24,000 acres and was 30% contained.

The Mission Fire was burning over a thousand acres near North Fork, already destroying four homes and continuing to threaten 250 structures. The evacuation advisory ordered for the areas south of Road 225 was being lifted as of 5:00pm, while the evacuation order for Cascadel Woods and surrounding areas remained in place.

Highway 41 was still closed south of Yosemite National Park as crews battled the Railroad Fire, nearly 12-thousand acres in size, and 43-percent contained. A public meeting was being held at 7:00 Thursday night at the Mountain Christian Center in Oakhurst with fire officials on hand to answer any questions.

Cal Fire reported that the Peak Fire burned 800 acres and was 100% contained as of August 1st.
