FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – Hurricane Harvey animals are being airlifted out of Texas — and California will see some of them.
The disaster is leaving pets all throughout Houston, helpless as shelters are overcrowded or flooded.
People are rescuing dogs and cats in coolers, airlifting them to safety out of the area, even out of the state.
Shelters in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo are offering space.
“It’s just such a heartbreaking situation so anything we can do to help — we know that this is just devastating to people and families and animals all over that region, so our hearts are with them.” – Jill Tucker, Executive Director, Woods Humane Society.
Jill Tucker, the Executive Director of the Woods Humane Society in San Luis Obispo, says they are working with the Animal Shelter Assistance Program and Santa Barbara Animal Services, agreeing to take in 200 dogs and cats.
“Our intention this weekend is to clear the shelters, we are offering fee-waived adult cats which actually will go for the whole month, and this weekend we are doing half price dog adoptions to try to get more people out and adopt out as many as they can.” Jill Tucker, Woods Humane Society.
Houston animals start arriving next week.
