Initiative Seeks to Expand Cage-Free Requirements in Calif.

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The Humane Society of the United States is aiming to get a measure on the 2018 ballot, which would impose harsh restrictions, on confining pigs and calves in cages.

The “Prevention of Cruelty to Farm Animals Act” comes about a decade after the successful campaign to mandate more space for egg-laying hens.

If allowed to proceed, and approved by voters, all eggs in the golden state would have to come from cage-free hens that are given one square foot of space, by 2019.

By 2021, the hens would have to be kept in cage-free systems.

Also by 2019, veal would have to come from farms who don’t lock calves in veal crates, and gestation crates for pigs would be prohibited, by the end of 2021.

Proponents would need nearly 366,000 valid signatures, to get their measure on the November ballot.
