Central High School Mourning Loss of Student Killed By Gunfire

FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The Central Unified School District is morning the loss of a senior student, who was killed during a shooting on Memorial Day.

18 year-old Kayla Foster died of her injuries from the drive-by shooting that took place around 2-am on Monday at a party in Southwest Fresno. She was not the target says Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

“At the present time, we do have some evidence that will allow us to solve the Kayla Foster Murder.” -Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

Kayla was the niece of former Deputy Police Chief Keith Foster. She was set to graduate on June 8th and attend Fresno City College.

Her Facebook photo (below) shows her smiling, standing in a dress at prom with her twin brother just two weeks ago.

Her twin brother and stepsister also attend Central High School.

Central Unified School District Superintendent Mark Sutton says Central Unified is “heartbroken.”

“It’s just tragic that somebody with so much promise is caught in something she didn’t deserve to be caught in.” -Superintendent Mark Sutton.

Superintendent Sutton described Foster as a bright young student.

“She was driven, she was one of those students that others looked up to – a student that had come a long way, a student that had done well in our certified nursing program. She wanted to continue in that field and go to Fresno City College and get into the nursing program. It’s just tragic Kayla’s life was cut so short.” -Superintendent Mark Sutton.

All this week crisis response teams are on the Central Unified’s East and West campuses to help students and staff as they grieve Foster’s death.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends. Central High School is prepared to help any student or staff member who may need support dealing with this tragedy.” – Superintendent Mark Sutton.
