FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – A pioneering gay politician is recognized by California’s governor.
Governor Jerry Brown issued a proclamation in Sacramento on Monday, declaring May 22nd as “Harvey Milk Day” here in the state of California.
A New York native, Harvey Milk became a pioneering gay politician, representing San Francisco’s Castro District, as one of the first openly gay men elected to public office.
Milk offered hope to members of the gay population before his assassination in 1978.
In 2014, the U.S. Postal Service also recognized Harvey Milk’s leadership when started issuing stamps in Milk’s honor.
May 22nd would have been Milk’s 88th birthday.
