2000 High school students from Northern and Central California are brining light to classrooms across the world.
More than 100 portable solar kits, supplied by the nonprofit, We Share Solar, will be placed into the hands of high school students, who will then build “Solar Suitcases,” thanks to a $400,000 dollar grant from PG&E.
The kits are small, portable photovoltaic lighting systems, powerful enough to illuminate a classroom.
“The Solar Suitcase is designed for daily use, it’s essentially a hard plastic suitcase with a system in it that includes a solar panel, and some outlets.” – PG&E Spokesperson Denny Boyles.
Students groups will then be invited to submit videos of their own local sustainability projects in a contest.
The winning groups get two send two students and a teacher to deliver the Solar Suitcases to rural Ecuador.
How to apply: The deadline to apply for your school or organization is May 24, 2017. Winners will be notified by June 7. For more information and to apply, visit pge.com/solarsuitcase.
