FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Democratic Calif. Assemblywoman Shirley Weber has proposed a bill, that would give teachers five years to earn permanent status.
Weber argues that the current two-year process isn’t long enough, and teachers who don’t receive tenure within that timeframe, typically don’t get a second chance.
If approved, the legislation would also require districts to provide additional support to fourth- and fifth-year teachers, who aren’t granted tenure.
The California Federation of Teachers has yet to take a stand on Weber’s measure.
However, it’ll likely the union will oppose it, saying it doesn’t address the issue of inadequate feedback, which can lead to under-performing educators.
