Proposed License Plate Scanning Prompts Privacy Concerns

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The City of Carlsbad is planning to install cameras at major intersections, in an effort to bolster public safety.

The San Diego County municipality says it’s experienced an increase in property crimes, which law enforcement believes are being committed by suspects from other cities.

The plan being considered by the city council would scan all incoming vehicles.

The cameras would then automatically recognize license plates, and check them against a database that includes information on stolen cars and missing persons.

However, some Carlsbad residents are concerned about privacy, saying they’re uneasy about having police monitor where they travel throughout the city.

Officials say the data collected will be deleted after one year, if it’s not part of a criminal investigation.
