The Fresno City Council on Thursday passed an ordinance to ban sale and display of the Confederate flag on city property.

“This is relatively a symbolic issue”, Councilman Oliver Baines told KMJ News.  “I don’t think that we probably have a major issue on Confederate flag on government property in Fresno or in most western states but I think in really recognizing where the country is on this issue and understanding how it’s a very sensitive issue for African Americans and me being African American”, Baines said.

There is also a bill circulating through the state capitol that would strip names of Confederate leaders off state and local property.

The change to the City municipal code would ban the sale or display of the Confederate flag only on city/government property, and the code would not affect private businesses or citizens from selling or displaying the Confederate flag.

The vote was 4-0, with councilmen Steve Brandau and Lee Brand abstaining.
