FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – As President-elect Donald Trump is expected to take a tough stance against illegal immigration, a proposed senate bill would restrict the ability of the feds to detain and deport over two million undocumented immigrants living in California.
Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León announced Senate Bill 54 on Wednesday, to create “safe zones” at public schools, hospitals and courthouses where immigrant enforcement would be banned.
SB 54 would stop state and local law enforcement from using their resources for immigration enforcement, and require state agencies to update confidentiality policies so immigration status is not shared for enforcement purposes.
Donald Trump promises to deport as many as 3 million undocumented immigrants who are criminals.
Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León made it clear SB 54 would not prevent law enforcement from complying with warrants to transfer violent offenders into federal custody.
