FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office demonstrated on Wednesday how one of its deputies likely shot himself in early November while on-duty as a plainclothes officer.
The deputy’s leg holster strap buckle likely got stuck inside the holster, which likely what triggered the firearm to discharge. The male portion of the buckle got stuck in the holster, with one of the prongs of the buckle wedged next to trigger. The deputy pulled on the strap – unaware it was wedged next to the trigger. When he pulled hard enough on the strap, it pulled the trigger.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says they will include this incident as an example in their training of deputies.
The deputy – who was hospitalized and relased the day of the incident – has yet to return to duty. You can see video demonstrations of how the Sheriff’s Office believe the gun discharged below.
