Over 100 students – 6th grade through 8th grade from Kerman Elementary, brought 100 water-wise plants that they are planting inside the parks.

The kids are participants in the Fresno County Office of Education Safe and Healthy Kids Program.

The plants were grown by fellow students who are taking part in the Fresno County Office of Education’s Scout Island.

The plants are native to the Valley and require little water to flourish.

Consultant Titus Karvon is with the Safe and Healthy Kids Program through the Fresno County Office of Education.

“It’s part of our summer programs, we have a service learning component and so what we do is we want to focus on the students giving back to their communities and so we partnered with Storyland to have the students come out here and help clean it up. It helps on both ends.” -Titus Karvon, Consultant, Safe and Healthy Kids Program.

Soon-to-be 8th grader Brianna Hernandez from the Kerman School District is one of hundreds of students working at the park.

Liz Kern: “Have you every been to Storyland Park?”

Brianna Hernandez: “Yeah, its really fun.”

Liz Kern: “So that’s kinda cool that you’re helping revitalize the park that you’ve visited.”

Brianna Hernandez: “Yeah, its better because smaller kids get to experience the same thing I got to experience.”

The park benefits from the hard work and it keeps the kids busy.

Edgar Loza was working to plant drought resident plants:

“My tool was a rake and a shovel – the best part was cleaning up the bark.” – Edgar Loza, Kerman Elementary.

Dirty fingernails, a lot of sweat, and great results.
