Study: Body Cameras Lead to Significant Decline in Complaints Against Police

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — The theory that body cameras improve relationships between police officers and citizens is getting more support.

A new University of Cambridge study, which examined departments in the U.K. and U.S., finds that when body cams are used, complaints filed against officers decline by more than 90 percent.

Researchers recommend that cameras be switched on at the beginning of an encounter, as assaults on officers tend to increase when they’re turned on in the middle on an incident, because the situation often escalates at that point.
