Calif. Settlement with Volkswagen Approved

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — A federal judge has signed off on an $86 million settlement, in a lawsuit filed by the Golden State against German automaker Volkswagen.

It accused VW of false advertising and unfair business practices, as it sold diesel vehicles that cheated on emissions tests.

The bulk of the money will be used to reimbursement the state for the cost of investigating claims, with a small portion going towards research on enhanced detection of defeat devices.

The settlement is separate from the larger, $14.7 billion proposal, which the federal government announced back in June.
