Concerns Over Twin Tunnels Funding Prompt More Calls for Transparency

FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Critics of the controversial Twin Tunnels, proposed for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta by Governor Jerry Brown, are seeking clarification of where the money will come from.

The estimated $16 billion tunnels are intended to bring fresh water to the Central Valley, as well as Southern California.

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Water District says its been told by the Brown Administration, that state or federal funds will be used to finish the plans.

However, opponents claim that’s go counter to longstanding assurances that local water agencies would pay for the tunnels, and not the state.

Meanwhile, state spokeswoman Nancy Vogel says funding for planning will come user payments for an existing water project, not from the general fund.
