FRESNO (KMJ) – An alarming social media post is a hoax…
According to the Facebook post — women in the Valley were being abducted and the police were trying to cover it up.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says that’s a load of hooey.
Chief Dyer says they are looking into where the false posts originated.
The following press release was sent by the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office:
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office is aware of a message being spread through text messages and social media, which claims five women have gone missing in 72 hours and there is a serial killer on the loose in the Fresno / Tulare area. This is a completely false rumor. To put things into perspective, there have been two recent missing persons cases in our area. One is the discovery of Alicia Haro, a Fresno woman whose death does not appear to be criminal. We are still waiting results of a toxicology test to determine an exact cause. Secondly, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office is searching for Cecilia Bravo Cabrera, a 30 year old woman who recently went missing after visiting Tachi Palace in Lemoore. Unfortunately there are some in the community who choose to incite fear without any basis. We encourage the public to monitor credible news outlets and government agencies to get accurate information and not fall into the trap of rumors, which happens much too frequently on the internet.
