FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — A new John Hopkins University study claims media reference to people accused of committing violence having a mental illness, may be to blame for misperceptions.

Experts say most people battling schizophrenia, anxiety, or depression, are not generally violent.

They add that while it’s clear that someone who commits an atrocity is not mentally healthy, anger or emotional issues may be to blame, as opposed to a diagnosed illness.

The stigma associated with mental illness is said to often discourage people who could greatly benefit from treatment, which researchers say rarely gets the credit it deserves.
