FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — Allowing drivers of electric cars to travel from San Diego to the Oregon border.

The California Energy Commission has approved nearly $9 million in grants, to install dozens of charging stations along major routes on highways 99 and 101, as well as Interstate 5.

Some will allow for a full charge within 30 minutes, with other taking up to 8 hours.

While electric vehicles have grown in popularity due to incentives and fuel costs, the commission says the private sector has been somewhat hesitant to invest in charging stations.
