Clovis Horse Reining Team Sends Record Number Of Rookies To Prestigious Competition In Las Vegas

CLOVIS, Calif. (KMJ/KFSN) — A group of young riders from Clovis is preparing to compete on one of the biggest stages in the world of horse reining.

Seven rookie qualifiers from Rick Kelley Performance Horses have earned spots in the international “Run for a Million” competition in Las Vegas, the most from any single barn in the country.

The team, made up entirely of girls ranging in age from 14 and up, has spent countless hours training in the arena mastering the art of reining, a judged event that showcases a horse’s athletic ability through precise movements.

“I’ve been riding since I was about five,” said Shelby Ensalaco, a senior at Buchanan High. “I’ve had a lot of growth these last few years. I’m pretty proud of where I’ve come from.”

Coach Rick Kelley, who leads the Clovis-based team, said the competition is one of the most elite in the sport.

“It’s probably become the Super Bowl of the events,” Kelley said.

Reining requires riders to use their feet, hands and voice to guide their horses through spins, stops and circles. All must be executed with precision. Kelley said repetition is key to success.

“These horses may have turned 10,000 times to get four perfect spins in a show,” he said.

Kelley is known for his tough coaching style, but said it’s rooted in high expectations for his students, both in and out of the arena.

“We’re very demanding, especially with the kids,” he said. “They maintain their academics, their home life and they’re responsible for their own horses.”

The team is set to travel to Las Vegas later this week, where they’ll compete under the bright lights and represent the Central Valley on an international stage.

“I love the adrenaline when I get to go down and stop. It just makes me really happy to experience that,” Ensalaco said.

Everyone back home in Clovis will be cheering them on.
