Group of Calif. Dems Try to Keep Trump Off the Ballot

A group of California democrat lawmakers are reportedly trying remove former President Donald Trump from the March 5 primary ballot.

Politico reports nine members of the California legislature wrote state Attorney General Rob Bonta claiming Trump is not eligible to be on the ballot due to his purported role in the Jan. 6 riot at the US Capitol. They allege Trump “incited an insurrection”.

The argument is a simple one. AG Bonta could argue that Trump is no longer qualified for the ballot because the 14th Amendment prohibits public officials who have been party to an insurrection from ever holding office again.

Should the effort succeed, California could be the first state to bump Trump off its ballot, even if the ruling is ultimately overturned, according to Politico.

Bonta’s office said he is reviewing the lawmakers’ request.
