KERMAN, Calif. (KMJ) — The City of Kerman announced the appointment of Steve Wilkins as the city’s new chief of police.

Chief Wilkins most recently served as Undersheriff for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office after 32 years in Fresno County law enforcement.

He began as a deputy and went on to manage several divisions during his career as Undersheriff, Public Administrator and Coroner’s Offices, Detective, Human Resources, and Internal Affairs Divisions of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Police Chief John Golden retired earlier this year after serving 8 years as chief.

Chief Wilkins was selected from an impressive group of candidates following a statewide recruitment.

Kerman Mayor Maria Pacheco who participated in the interviews said, “This was not an easy choice given the high-quality candidates we interviewed, but Mr. Wilkin’s depth of experience and knowledge was impressive.”

Mayor Pro Tem Bill Nijjer, who also served on the interview panel, said, “I am very pleased to have someone of Chief Wilkin’s caliber lead our Police Department and I am confident he will be an excellent Chief.”

We had a great list of candidates, but Chief Wilkins clearly stood out.

“The City was not surprised by the number of high-quality candidates that wished to serve Kerman given the City’s reputation for community-oriented policing, high-quality service, and low crime”, said Kerman City Manager John Jansons.

Chief Wilkins is scheduled to take over as chief on Monday, September 11th.

The City will host a ceremonial swearing-in at their September 13th City Council meeting at 6:00 pm at City Hall for friends, family, and the public.

One of Chief Wilkins’ first duties will be to recruit for several vacancies within the department.
