
(KMJ) – A Bakersfield dentist pleads guilty on Monday to stealing half a million dollars in COVID-19 relief money.
Federal prosecutors say Ranjan Rajbanshi, had dental practices in Bakersfield and Santa Barbara.
U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert said between April 2020 and February 2022, Rajbanshi received more than $850,000 in COVID-19 relief money that was meant to help struggling small businesses.
Prosecutors say the 46-year-old used $500,000 from the Small Business Administration and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for his own investments.
Prosecutors say Rajbanshi told authorities he would use the money only for business purposes such payroll, business expenses, and protective equipment for him and his office staff.
Rajbanshi agreed to pay back the money before he will be sentenced on Dec. 4th, 2023.
He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
