FRESNO, CA (KMJ) – The Fresno Unified school year has started even as a strike looms.

Superintendent Bob Nelson speaking to KMJ says if teachers strike this fall, he plans to keep schools open, including paying substitutes $500 dollars a day if necessary.

There are free meals for all children ages one to 18, and Nelson said reading and safety are priorities.

Fresno Unified hopes to enroll 1,961 students in transitional kindergarten this school year.
