Rep. Kevin McCarthy: ‘I Don’t Believe in Cancel Culture’

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told Fox News on Thursday that he doesn’t “believe in cancel culture,” when asked about Wyoming GOP Rep. Liz Cheney’s statement that President Donald Trump shouldn’t have a role in the party.

Cheney, the third-highest ranking Republican in the House, said on Wednesday that Trump shouldn’t “be playing a role in the future of the party or the country,” following the Capitol riot.

“I don’t believe in cancel culture, whether it be Republican or Democrat. I believe in free speech. I believe the Republican Party is a big tent: We are a party of ideas and people should be hearing our ideas,” McCarthy told “Fox & Friends” on Thursday, when asked about Cheney’s remark.

“The idea that the Democrats even yesterday in their hearings were trying to get cable networks to not cover your station and other stations that they don’t agree — they’re trying to get Amazon not to print books — but the idea that a Republican would join with the cancel culture, I just think is wrong, it’s beyond just having a difference of opinion,” he said.

McCarthy also addressed the coronavirus relief bill that Democrats have put forward, saying that “this one is not a bill that would focus on what Republicans want to about putting us back to work, back to school, back to health. This bill is actually too costly, too corrupt, and too liberal. Less than 9% of this bill goes to defeating this virus, less than 9%. We have a trillion dollars still sitting out there that’s already been appropriated … The Democrats last night just blocked for the third time the $64 billion that is sitting there that hasn’t been used to go to open schools, and the money in this bill, it won’t even get to the schools until next year, 95% of it.”
