Turning Food Waste Into Plant Food

The California Farm Bureau Federation is posting on its website that fermented food waste could be used to deliver beneficial bacteria to food plants.

University of California, Riverside researchers have discovered that beneficial microbes on crops can greatly multiply when food waste is added to plant-growing systems in a greenhouse.

Researchers believe that fermented food waste appears to help plants resist pathogens and might lower farm carbon emissions.

UC Riverside is reporting that food waste poses a serious threat to the planet.

In the U.S. alone, as much half of all food is thrown away.

Most of this waste isn’t recycled and is taking up more than 20% of America’s landfill volume.

Researchers looked at byproducts from two kinds of waste: beer mash which is a byproduct of beer production and mixed food waste from grocery stores.
