OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – The decline of local news outlets in the U.S. has been associated mostly with rural, lower income areas.
But the demise of local daily newspapers that once served hundreds of thousands of readers throughout the eastern San Francisco Bay Area shows that local news is being hit hard even in relatively affluent areas with high education levels.
That so many communities in the East Bay have lost their daily newspapers is somewhat ironic: Many of the people who live there work for the giant tech companies whose dominance has contributed to the steep decline of the traditional news industry.
