Mayors Ask More Gun Control; Central Valley Mayors Not On List

FRESNO (KMJ) – Hundreds of US mayors sent a letter to Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell urging them to call the senate back to Washington to take action on gun safety legislation.

The letter from the US Conference of Mayors is endorsed by Republican and Democratic mayors, including the mayors of Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and Stockton no Central Valley mayors signed it.

The letter urges the senate to consider two bipartisan bills that previously passed the US House of Representatives: the mayors say the bills would close serious loopholes in the nation’s background check system for gun purchases, and lengthen the background check review period deadline.

Executive Director Tom Cochran says the United States Conference of Mayors has supported common sense gun regulations since 1968 when Dr. Martin Luther King and Senator Robert Kennedy were assassinated.
